The Speech and Hearing Center is available to provide screenings
at either of our two locations (Downtown and Mandarin) as well as
providing services at preschool facilities. Often times traveling
to the preschool location provides teachers and parents with the
convenience of on-site testing in an environment that is familiar
and comfortable to the child. A complete screening includes a hearing
screening as well as a speech and language screening. After the screening
is performed and scored, a letter will be sent home to the parent
to indicate if the screening was passed or failed.
Early identification of children with communication difficulties
is particularly important for providing appropriate intervention
that could prevent later academic failure. The Fluharty-2 (Speech
and Language Screening Instrument) provides an objective, standardized,
and reliable means of identifying deficiencies in the multiple
language modules that contribute to the ability to communicate
effectively through speech. Children who do not pass the screening
test are subsequently referred for a complete Speech and Language
Evaluation. Results are then discussed with parents and a referral
for speech therapy will follow as warranted.
The Fluharty-2 Preschool
Speech and Language Screening Test is
individually administered to children between the ages of 3-0 and
6-11 to identify quickly those who need a more comprehensive diagnostic
evaluation of communication skills. The five subtests of the Fluharty-2
include: articulation, repeating sentences, following directives
and answering questions, describing actions and sequencing events.
These subtests were designed to provide an overview of communication
behaviors that are characteristic of a typically developing preschool-aged
child. A brief description is as follows:
- Articulation: The child’s phonological abilities
are sampled by asking him/her to name pictures and then evaluated
by the accuracy of the articulation of the single-word responses.
- Repeating Sentences: Measures the child’s ability
to recall and reproduce a variety of sentence patterns.
- Following Directives and Answering
Questions: Measures the child’s ability to comprehend the meaning
of sentences and question patterns and respond to them correctly.
- Describing Actions: Measures the child’s ability
to incorporate knowledge of verbs and syntax by describing actions
depicted in drawings.
- Sequencing Events: Measures the child’s ability
to produce a series of sentences to convey information on a given
topic.
