May was an important month for the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center as we celebrated 60 years of service to the Jacksonville Community. Heather Whitestone McCallum, the first hearing impaired Miss America, along with numerous community leaders and supporters, joined us to celebrate this milestone anniversary at a reception held on May 30 at San Jose Country Club.
We are proud of the long and storied history we have in the Jacksonville community – beginning as a speech clinic for children and evolving over the years into today’s multi-faceted speech and hearing center serving children, adults and seniors.
In 1949 there were no services in our community for children with speech and language problems.
The Junior League of Jacksonville recognized the need for these important services for the children in our community, and along with the leadership of Sara Barrett and the support of Jessie Ball Dupont Fund, founded the Children’s Speech Correction Clinic which would later be known as the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center.
